The material

What makes a tile porcelain?

Porcelain tiles are pressed from refined clays, feldspar and minerals and fired at high temperature until the body becomes dense and almost non-porous. Internationally, porcelain is usually defined by water absorption of 0.5% or less (ISO 13006 / EN 14411 group BIa) — the property behind its strength, stain resistance and suitability for demanding floors.

Printed glaze (glazed porcelain)
Dense, vitrified porcelain body

Most porcelain made in India is glazed porcelain: a dense body with a digitally printed glaze that reproduces marble, stone, wood or concrete. Through-body or full-body porcelain, where the colour runs through the tile, is also produced, typically in plainer designs. Both are sold for export as porcelain — the question that matters is the tested water absorption and the finish, not the label.

For buyers, the practical differences are durability under foot traffic, behaviour in wet areas, and how the surface finish wears. These depend on the specific product, so we treat every technical value as something to confirm against the manufacturer’s test data before you order.

FAQ

Porcelain tiles: buyer questions

Do you export porcelain tiles from India?

Yes. Thorson Tiles is a tile supplier and exporter based in Ahmedabad. Our porcelain tiles are made by our manufacturing partners in India. We handle samples, specifications, packing and export documents, check every order before loading and invoice you directly.

What water absorption do your porcelain tiles have?

Porcelain is generally defined by water absorption of 0.5% or less (ISO 13006 group BIa). The exact tested value differs by product, so we confirm it from the manufacturer’s test data for each tile you shortlist rather than quoting a general figure.

Which porcelain sizes are available from India?

Common porcelain formats include 600 × 600, 600 × 1200, 800 × 800 and 1000 × 1000 mm, plus wood-look planks such as 200 × 1200 mm. Larger formats are produced by some manufacturers. Availability depends on the design and factory, and is confirmed at quotation.

Can I get samples before placing an order?

Sample requests can be arranged for shortlisted designs. Tell us the tiles you are considering, your destination and how many pieces you need, and we will confirm what can be sent and the cost involved.

Is polished porcelain suitable for wet areas?

Polished surfaces are usually more slippery when wet, so they are generally chosen for dry interior areas. For bathrooms, pool areas or commercial floors, ask for a matt or textured finish with a tested slip rating that meets your local requirements.
