Outdoor tiles specified for grip, climate and load

We supply outdoor porcelain made by our manufacturing partners in India — 8–10 mm textured and anti-slip tiles for bonded terraces, 20 mm pavers for gravel, sand, grass or pedestals, wood-look planks and heavy-duty tiles for vehicle areas. We match thickness, finish and slip rating to the area and climate, and share the manufacturer’s test reports with the specification.

The material

What makes a tile suitable outdoors?

An outdoor tile needs a surface that keeps its grip when wet, a dense, low-absorption body that copes with weather, and enough strength for the load it will carry. In practice that means a textured porcelain tile with a tested slip rating — and, in cold climates, a frost-resistance result — in the thickness that suits the area and laying method.

Structured or anti-slip surface
Dense porcelain body — 8–10 mm bonded, 20 mm for pavers

Slip resistance is measured differently around the world: ramp tests that give “R” ratings (DIN 51130), pendulum tests that give a PTV value, and DCOF in North America. Our anti-slip outdoor ranges are commonly made to the R11–R12 class, where tested. The rating for each product comes from the manufacturer’s test report, which we share with the specification — tell us the method and value your market requires.

Thickness follows the laying method. Standard 8–10 mm outdoor tiles are bonded with an exterior-grade adhesive to a concrete base — terraces, balconies, pool surrounds and walkways. 20 mm porcelain pavers are made to be laid dry on gravel, sand or grass, or on adjustable pedestals for raised terraces and roof decks, and can also be bonded. Driveways and parking areas use dedicated heavy-duty tiles in smaller formats, on a base designed for vehicle loads.

Inside to outside. Many outdoor designs are companions to interior ranges — the same look with a textured or anti-slip surface, and in some designs a 20 mm paver version — so one floor can run from the living room to the terrace.

Formats & finishes

Formats, thicknesses and finishes

Outdoor porcelain comes in two main thicknesses — standard tiles for bonded areas and 20 mm pavers for dry or raised laying — plus heavy-duty formats for vehicle areas. Many designs are companions to interior ranges, so the same look can run from inside to outside.

Formats drawn to the same scale

  • 300 × 300mm
  • 600 × 600mm
  • 400 × 800mm
  • 600 × 1200mm
  • 200 × 1200mm

Nominal sizes in millimetres. 600 × 600, 400 × 800 and 600 × 1200 are typical 20 mm paver formats; 300 × 300 is a typical heavy-duty format.

Finishes

  • Structured / texturedThe everyday outdoor surface for terraces, balconies and walkways.
  • Anti-slip / gripHigher-grip surfaces, commonly in the R11–R12 class where tested, for pool surrounds, ramps and wet areas.
  • Carving / rusticDeeper relief that follows the stone or wood design, for a natural, cleft feel underfoot.
  • Matt outdoorSmoother, low-reflection finish for covered patios and verandas.

Specification checklist

What to check on an outdoor specification

Outdoor failures are usually specification failures. These are the points we confirm with the manufacturer before quoting.

Outdoor tiles: specifications to confirm
SpecificationWhy it mattersTypical / status
Slip resistanceThe single most important outdoor property; state the test method and value you need (R, PTV or DCOF).Anti-slip ranges commonly R11–R12 class (DIN 51130), where tested. Product rating per the manufacturer’s test report, shared with the specification.
Frost resistanceEssential in climates with freeze–thaw cycles (e.g. ISO 10545-12).Per product, from the manufacturer’s test report, shared with the specification
Water absorptionLow absorption helps tiles withstand weather and frost.Porcelain typically ≤ 0.5% (ISO 13006 group BIa); product value per the test report
ThicknessBonded areas and dry or raised laying need different thicknesses.8–10 mm bonded · 20 mm pavers for gravel, sand, grass or pedestals
Breaking strengthRelevant for pedestal laying, heavy foot traffic and vehicle loads.Per product, from the manufacturer’s test report (e.g. ISO 10545-4)
Edges and calibreRectified edges and consistent calibre matter for narrow joints and pedestal systems.Confirmed per product in the specification
Shade under daylightCheck samples outdoors — colours shift in direct sun.Approved on samples before production
Packing and weightThick tiles are heavy: fewer pieces per box, and a container fills by weight before volume.20 mm pavers: typically 2 pcs of 600 × 600 per box (0.72 m²), around 45 kg per m²; container load is weight-limited
Test reportsProof of the values above for the exact product and finish.Manufacturer’s reports for each shortlisted product, shared with the specification
MOQ and lead timeSet per design and production schedule.Confirmed at quotation

Your RFQ

What to put in an outdoor RFQ

Describe the area and the climate, not only the tile.

  1. Area and use — terrace, pool surround, walkway, roof deck, ramp or vehicle area.
  2. Climate — whether freeze–thaw resistance is required.
  3. Slip requirement — the rating and test method your project specifies.
  4. Laying method — bonded to concrete, dry-laid on gravel, sand or grass, or on pedestals.
  5. Size, thickness and look — e.g. a 600 × 600 × 20 mm paver or a 600 × 1200 mm bonded tile, and whether it should match an interior tile.
  6. Test reports needed — the standards your market asks for, so we can check them against the manufacturer’s reports.
  7. Quantity and destination — m², port and Incoterm.

FAQ

Outdoor tiles: buyer questions

Can you supply outdoor tiles from India?

Yes. We supply outdoor porcelain made by our manufacturing partners in India: 8–10 mm textured and anti-slip tiles for bonded terraces, 20 mm porcelain pavers, 200 × 1200 mm wood-look planks and heavy-duty tiles for vehicle areas. We help match the product to the area and climate, send samples and share the manufacturer’s test reports. Final specifications, MOQ and lead time are confirmed at quotation.

Do you supply 20 mm porcelain pavers?

Yes. 20 mm porcelain pavers are available in formats such as 600 × 600, 600 × 1200 and 400 × 800 mm, in stone, concrete and wood looks with textured or anti-slip surfaces. They can be dry-laid on compacted gravel or sand, on grass, or on adjustable pedestals for raised terraces and roof decks, and can also be bonded to concrete. The exact formats and finishes for each design are confirmed at quotation.

Which slip rating do I need for outdoor tiles?

It depends on the area, your country’s regulations and the project specification. Ramp “R” ratings, pendulum PTV values and DCOF are measured differently and are not interchangeable, so tell us the method and value your market requires. Our anti-slip outdoor ranges are commonly made to the R11–R12 class, where tested; we check your requirement against the manufacturer’s test report for each product you shortlist.

Which test reports can you share?

For each outdoor product you shortlist, we share the manufacturer’s test reports with the specification — for example slip resistance, water absorption, breaking strength and frost resistance, where the product has been tested for them. Tell us the standards your market requires and we will check them against the reports before you order.

Are outdoor tiles frost resistant?

Frost resistance depends on the product and is shown by testing, for example to ISO 10545-12. If your project is in a freeze–thaw climate, tell us at the start and we will share the manufacturer’s frost result for each tile you shortlist.

Can I get matching indoor and outdoor tiles?

Often, yes. Many outdoor ranges are made as companions to interior designs — the same look with a textured or anti-slip surface, and in some designs a 20 mm paver version. Tell us the interior tile and we will check which outdoor companions our manufacturing partners offer. Surface and batch can change how a shade reads, so compare samples side by side.

How are 20 mm pavers packed and shipped?

Pavers weigh roughly twice as much per m² as standard 8–10 mm tiles, so they are packed with fewer pieces per box on export pallets, and a container reaches its weight limit long before it is full. Expect fewer m² per container than with standard tiles. Packing, m² per box and container load are confirmed per product at quotation.
